Mathewson made his All Blacks debut in their thrilling win over Irish province Munster in 2009, having battled with Piri Weepu for the No.9 jersey at both Wellington and the Hurricanes.
A compact player with a good eye for a break and the pace to back it up, he switched to the Blues for the 2010 Super 14 in order to push for Test honours. He was called up to the All Blacks' Tri-Nations squad as cover later in the year and subsequently won a place among the replacements, ironically as back-up to Weepu, for their second Bledisloe Cup meeting with the Wallabies. He made his entrance into the Test arena during the second half of the game in Christchurch, helping the All Blacks to eke out a 20-10 win.
