Dan Carter has been ruled out of New Zealand's Rugby Championship clash with South Africa next weekend with the calf strain that also sidelined him for the All Blacks' victory over Argentina on Saturday.

Carter was initially named in the side to tackle the Pumas but was a late withdrawal after straining his left calf muscle at an indoor training session last Thursday. He was replaced by Aaron Cruden, who helped steer the All Blacks to a hard-fought 21-5 win in Wellington and he is likely to retain the playmaker role for the date with the Springboks in Dunedin.

"We have made the decision he won't be playing next week," All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said. "The type of treatment he needs, it will take the pressure right off and give the calf the opportunity to come right. We're trying to, I guess, take him off his legs so he can concentrate on getting it better rather than trying to get it better to play."

Beauden Barrett is once again expected to provide fly-half cover on the bench while Carter is expected to travel with the All Blacks for their final two matches in the Championship against the Pumas in La Plata on September 29 and against the Springboks in Soweto on October 6.
