Rugby fans turned to social media to vent their fury over how long they were made to wait to buy World Cup tickets which went on sale on Tuesday.

The organisers of the 2015 showpiece released another 70,000 tickets for general sale, with England's opener against Fiji one of the matches included. Of the 70,000 tickets, 50,000 were planned with the extra 20,000 coming from returns.

But fans were frustrated by the wait with some in a queue for over seven hours. One disgruntled supporter tweeted at 17.21 yesterday: "Been queuing since 10am for Rugby World Cup tickets but still having to wait! Same happened with Olympics. Waste of time Disillusioned Joke!"

The official Twitter account for the Rugby World Cup responded to the disgruntlement, saying: "We are currently experiencing a very high level of demand for #RWC2015 tickets. If you are in the queue please bear with us. Many thanks."

Prior to Debbie Jevons' departure from ER 2015, the organisational body behind the World Cup, she said the website could cope with the high demand for tickets. She said: "The capacity we've built into the system means we are confident will stand up."
