Former Queensland Reds prop and hooker Albert Anae has returned to Australia from Europe, signing a one-year deal with the Brumbies on with an option for a second year.

The New Zealand-born front-rower played 27 Super Rugby matches in four season with the Reds before joining Italian club Benetton Treviso, for whom he played 15 games last season.

The former Australian Schools and Australian Under-19 and Under-20 player says he has unfinished business in Super Rugby.

"I thought I had a lot more to give to Australian rugby and I wanted to give it a crack one more time in Super Rugby," Anae said. "I enjoyed my time [in Italy], but deep down inside I knew I wanted to come back to Super Rugby. "To get picked up by the Brumbies, it's a real honour to be here. You come across forwards that play internationals for their own countries and you get real starstruck.

Anae returns to Australia with new-found respect for the art of the scrum.

"They take pride in their scrummaging in Italy so it helped my game in terms of scrums and had a massive emphasis on the set piece. That's what I took out of European rugby."
