Daniel Ricciardo believes his Toro Rosso team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne is still in the running for the open seat at Red Bull in 2014.

Ricciardo was given a test with Red Bull at Silvestone last week and team principal Christian Horner said the decision was "essentially" between Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen. But the Australian is not becoming complacent and believes it is still a three-way fight for the seat despite Vergne's test snub.

"I still believe Jean-Eric is in the mix - they haven't completely counted him out," he said. "Obviously it was a nice boost for me to get the test, but if he kicks my backside this weekend [in Hungary] then it can all very quickly turn around. I think I've still got to focus on just trying to be the best I can.

"Kimi is a bit out of my control, but if I get close enough to him I'll try to hold him at bay or get around him, but I won't treat Kimi or Jean-Eric differently. I'll still try to get as far forward as I can. If it's in front of them then that's a good thing, but I'll do what I can."

Despite a spin into the gravel at Silverstone, Ricciardo felt the afternoon test could not have gone much better.

"I did the best I could," he said. "I think the little off was a good thing if anything. It proved that I was trying to get adapted and find the limit as quickly as possible. I guess they can see that whichever way they like. But I got down to the times pretty quickly and then had that moment and I think it was clear that I was trying to get comfortable as soon as possible.

"With the technical feedback I don't think I'm shaping up too bad with my comments to the engineer and the correlation seems to be okay. I think I gave them as much as I could have got from the test but obviously they are going to keep a close eye on me here at Toro Rosso. But with that half day I was pretty pleased with what came out of it."
