Andrews was a towering figure in South Africa's Rugby World Cup winning side in 1995.

The second-row made his international debut a year previously against England in June 1994. After starting the tournament at lock he moved to No.8 for the semi-final victory over France and the final against New Zealand. He went on to play 77 Tests for South Africa and scored 12 tries for the Springboks.

At club level Andrews played for the Natal Sharks and helped them to Currie Cup crowns in 1995 and 1996.
