The Proteas defeated the Springboks by 14 runs in their Twenty20 cricket challenge at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.

The Proteas made 4-188 after being sent in, Faf du Plessis top-scoring with 77 not out, before dismissing the Springboks for 174 in response. Former Springboks captain Bob Skinstad top-scored in the reply with 38 off 22 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

The Springboks made a decent start in their chase, Victor Matfield laying a foundation with 23, featuring in the best partnership of the innings when he and Franco van der Merwe added 41 off only 24 balls for the third wicket, but they lost wickets regularly and never mounted a serious challenge to their target.

Van der Merwe had the 15 000-strong crowd in raptures as he smashed one boundary and three sixes in his 14-ball 28, while Willie le Roux hit two fours and a six in scoring 16 off only eight balls.

Willem Alberts was best of the Springboks bowlers, taking 2-14 as he dismissed Quinton de Kock (9) and Henry Davids (0) off successive balls.
