Former All Blacks halfback Piri Weepu's contract with French club Oyonnax has been severed with immediate effect.

The club gave no explanation for the axing, issuing a short statement that Weepu wouldn't see out the first year of his two-season deal.

"Oyonnax have ended Piri Weepu's contract. The player is no longer part of the club's professional squad," it said.

Plagued by thigh and groin injuries, the 32-year-old has started just five of 12 games in a difficult season for Oyonnax. They are 13th out of 14 teams, having lost nine times.

It continues a chequered club experience for 71-Test veteran Weepu since he left New Zealand two years ago. He was released early by London Welsh during their disastrous campaign in the 2014-15 English Premiership, losing all 22 games to be relegated.
