Mac Henderson was capped three times for Scotland 1933, featuring in the back five of the pack in the victories against Wales, England and Ireland. His career came to an end when he was injured early on in the Barbarians' Easter tour that year.
New Zealand held a special place in his affections too as he farmed on a sheep station in the North Island. "I worked on a sheep station in Hawke's Bay and half-way through a rugby season I was sent from one sheep station to another."
He played for the Waipukarau club in Hawke's Bay and made quite an impression as a hard-tackling flanker. "An official said he would eat his hat if I wasn't selected for Hawke's Bay but it was then I moved to another sheep station," he said.
He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, and went on to farm in East Lothian. In 1962 he was the co-founder of Henderson's Salad Table, Edinburgh's first vegetarian restaurant. He was the first Scottish international to reach 100 years old. He died in March 2009.
