Leicester Tigers have confirmed the signing of All Black lock Brad Thorn on what is believed to be a one-year deal.

Thorn will arrive at the Tigers in late September and will offer a wealth of experience in their second-row. Thorn, 39, has experienced a remarkable career where he has won a World Cup, a Super Rugby title and the Heineken Cup while he was at Leinster in 2012. He has also played in rugby league's State of Origin series.

And despite his ageing years, Tigers boss Richard Cockerill is sure Thorn will make an impact in the Aviva Premiership.

"Brad has a huge amount of experience in different environments across both rugby codes and we think his experience, his knowledge and his work ethic will be an asset to our squad," Cockerill said. "He is 39 years old but he is in very good shape and is known in the game for his fitness levels and his attitude towards playing and training. We look forward to his arrival and seeing him work with the squad here. He will arrive in the next month and be available to play for us by the end of September."

The news is a timely boost for Leicester as they will be without lock Ed Slater for the start of the season. Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury: "Ed has a knee problem that he picked up playing for England against the Crusaders.

"He will probably be ready to play again by the end of September or the beginning of October."
