Louw fit to return in six weeks

South Africa are optimistic Francois Louw will be fit in time for the November internationals after he underwent surgery on Monday.

Louw needed surgery on a pinched nerve in his neck and South Africa doctor Craig Roberts is hopeful he will be back in six weeks. Roberts said: "Francois initially took a knock to his head, and the scans showed damage to a nerve in his neck.

"He has had surgery today on the disc and that should relieve the pressure. He may be ready for the November Tests at the end of the year."

The prognosis is similar for Ulster scrum-half Ruan Pienaar who picked up a knee injury against New Zealand. Roberts said: "It looks like he'll be ready for the end-of-year tour."

And the Boks management are hopeful Willem Alberts will be available for their end-of-year tour. He recently had surgery on a back injury and Roberts said of the back-rower: "Willem is doing well after surgery for a pinched nerve in his back. He has started to come along nicely and we'll see if he's ready for the end-of-year tour. Everyone else is over the bumps and bruises after the New Zealand Test."
