Profile

Jonathan Stones is the managing director of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and is the South African representative of SANZAR, the governing body of southern hemisphere rugby.

Stones succeeded John Prinsloo 18 months ago after Prinsloo was forced to give up one of his positions within SARU, he remains chief executive.

During his short term in charge, Stones has seen both the highs and lows of South Africa's recent history.

Following the euphoria of the 2007 World Cup victory, Stones and the management team were embroiled in the controversial appointment of Peter De Villiers as national coach.

Stones was a vocal supporter of former coach Jake White following the World Cup, but was unable to stop mechanisms within SARU ousting him almost as soon as the tournament ended.

Stones' relationship with SARU president Oregan Hoskins has become increasingly hostile in recent months, with rumours abounding that Stones and fellow board member Mpumelelo Tshume will be ousted from their jobs.

Complaints over lengthy absences from office and unauthorised flights have been touted as the mitigating circumstances for their dismissal, but as a paid employee of SA Rugby, Stones would be an expensive loss for the union.

With SA Rugby, the commercial arm of SARU, being consumed into the larger organisation it is unclear as to whether Stones has a future with the organisation.
