Wycliff Palu will miss New South Wales Waratahs Super Rugby fixture against Melbourne Rebels at AAMI Park on Friday, dealing the reigning champions another blow after their four-try defeat by Western Force in round one. Palu is absent with a knee injury sustained against the force.

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika said earlier in the week that Palu had been troubled by the knee in the aftermath of the loss to the Force, but he originally named an unchanged side to meet a Rebels team coming off a win over the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Veteran back-rower Stephen Hoiles, who was on the bench for last weekend's game, moves into the starting line-up. Hoiles started last year's final against the Crusaders at blindside flanker.

The Waratahs bench for Friday's game is yet to be finalised.
