Summary

Time Score

Welcome to coverage of the last Test of the summer. And then it all starts again in August with the Rugby Championship. Scotland have won three times on their world tour - USA, Canada and Argentina - but they are missing some frontline players as this is outside the official IRB window and South Africa, themselves ringing changes, are a different proposition.

Anyone fancies Scotland they can get 11/1. South Africa a less appealing 50-1 on to win!

Out come the teams ...and an unusual version of Flower of Scotland follows. A South Africa's Got Talent audition version. A more conventional take on the home anthem.

1

Scotland kick-off and straight away South Africa show they are going to run and run ....

2

And already Scotland defending in depth and shipping penalties. One with six metres of the line, in front of the posts, and SA kick to the corner

3 5 - 0

This could be messy. South Africa score under the posts, Marcell Coetzee drives over from 4m out. Scotland have not touched the ball yet! Ten phases, two penalties and a clinical finish

4 7 - 0

Pollard scores his first international points, and there will be none easier

7 7 - 3

An offisde, so Scotland win a penalty wide out on the right, close to the 10m line, and a perfect kick from Duncan Weir, never strayed off line

10 12 - 3

A quick movement down the line, Willie le Roux has the overlap at the end and scores in the corner, the speed of the passing did for Scotland there

11 14 - 3

Great kick from Pollard right out on the line. We are told that's 19 conversions on the trot for the Boks

14

Another penalty against Scotland and Glen Jackson warns the Scots. "That's four silly penalties in the tackle, We can't have that."

16 19 - 3

Best of the three so far. JP Pietersen surges through from the middle of the pitch, commits men and then send a perfectly weighted grubber kick through,Lwazi Mvovo has the pace and the bounce is good

17

And the kiss of death for Pollard as he misses his third kick

20

First Scotland pressure of the match, they are held up short of the line and SA swarm over them to clear

21

Scotland attack ends with a loose pass, and as Willie le Roux runs clear and chips he is taken out by a deliberate shoulder from Ross Ford. One of those that looks horrible in slow-mo

26

A lot of huffing and puffing but all in the middle third of the pitch

30

Scotland now at least able to hold the South Africans but they continue to ship penalties too often

32

Jan Serfontein breaks the line and is clawed down five metres out, his pass is knocked on. A let-off for the Scots

33

SA have 60% of possession and 63% of territory. Is that all?

36 19 - 6

Scotland get a penalty close to halfway and a debate ensues. Corner or posts. Posts wins out but why? Three won't make any difference, they might as well go for broke and kick to the corner. That said, a super hoof from Duncan Weir has the legs

38

Nice counter attack starts as Tommy Seymour picks up a loose ball from a scrappy pass and South Africa briefly rattled.

40

Weir kicks a penalty well into the SA 22 and Scotland trot to the lineout. They want a crack before the break

40+1

Good break ends as Sean Maitland piles into Stuart Hogg. South Africa run the penalty rather than kick for touch

40+2

Scotland in turn opt to keep the ball in play and it turn they drive forward and the half ends with a knock-on by Scotland.

HT

After 15 minutes Scotland would have bitten the arm off (sorry Luis) anyone who said they would only trail by 13. But after a reallt wobbly start they have clawed back into this game. The odds remain massively against them but they are holding on

42

Similar attritional start to the second half, South Africa on top, Scotland snuffling them out effectively

44 22 - 6

Scotland concede another penalty just inside their half, and now South Africa are going for the points rather than the corner. It's straight, as is his kick. Scotland warned for a second time by Glen Jackson who might be running out of patience

47

Bright spell for Scotland who have pushed SA back into their own 22 but, again, all the hard work is undone when they ship a penalty as they are turned over

50

South Africa leave Scotland defence creaking but they hold out although another penalty conceded. But ref and TJ consult over some argy bargy and Tim Swinson is shown a yellow for holding a player off the ball. Well, shown the yellow after the ref shows a bemused team-mate the card before apologising

51 27 - 6

The driving lineout that results from the penalty results in another try, Tim Swinson missed there and the driving maul was allowed to get within a metre before it was seriously challenged. Marcell Coetzee with his second of the evening

52 29 - 6

Handre Pollard enjoying his debut

55

Desperate defence from Scotland as South Africa run around with glee, a man over adding to their enthusiasm

56 34 - 6

A long pass misses three backs and and eventually JP Pietersen on the right wing goes over, initially on his back as he is tackled but his strength is such he turns as he slides over and touches the ball down

61 39 - 6

Scotland bravely throwing it around but a loose pass from Henry Pyrgos is intercepted inside his own half by Lwazi Mvovo and with his pace there's no chance of anyone catching him and he scores in the corner

62 41 - 6

Pollard goes 5 from 7 with one of the hardest kicks of the evening

64 46 - 6

Lodewyk de Jager scores his first international try from 40m out as SA gather a high kick. A giant of a man but he is only caught just short of the line and his momentum carries him over under the posts

65

Even my granny could have got that. Pollard 6 from 8. Easy stuff, this international rugby. Scotland looking shellshocked. But this was a game too far and as for agreeing to it with so many players ruled out. Daft.

70 48 - 6

Pollard - conversion

73

Scotland once more gaining some possession but not really looking remotely threatening

76

Both sides throwing the ball around. Scotland look more vulnerable when they are being run at

77

There's a try coming, Scotland can't hold out

78 53 - 6

... and they don't, Lodewyk de Jager drives over from six metres out, bouncing between two tackles and he lies on the ground, half happy, half in pain with cramp. That had been coming for a minute or so as Scotland just looked unable to stem the flow

79 55 - 6

Pollard off so Marnitz Boshoff kicks the conversion

80+1

Scotland ending on the attack but they have only threatened to score a try a couple of times, and even then briefly

80+2

And after 22 phases they lose possession, allowing South Africa to conterattack and then, in turn throw the ball away themselves

FT

South Africa do all that was asked of them while Scotland realistically could not have expected anything else. The tries came in burst in each half and South Africa impressed on the break and when throwing the ball around. Scotland never looked threatening even when they had periods of possession.
