The Blues' victory over Western Force at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday was achieved only at substantial cost, with their All Blacks stars Jerome Kaino and Charles Piutau each sustaining a Super Rugby season-ending injury.

The Blues confirmed on Monday that Kaino had sustained a compound fracture to the ring finger of his left hand that would sideline the player for eight weeks, while announcing that Piutau had sustained a grade two medial cruciate tear that would sideline him for six weeks.

The Blues also announced that Luke Braid had suffered another concussion, and said that Dan Bowden would miss the match against the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday with a groin strain. The Blues will monitor Braid "on a regular basis" with a timeframe for his return "yet to be determined".

"The bone came out of the skin but from what the doctors have been saying it looks a lot worse than what it is," Kaino told New Zealand's Sunday Star Times newspaper. "I wasn't nauseous. I was thinking how to get it back in place and if it was going to hurt. It was a bit numb to start off with but when the doctor started trying to wiggle it back in place that's when the pain started coming."

Kirwan, meanwhile, said that Piutau "can't feel anything so we'll have to get him scanned, it could be a wee while".
