Free practice 3

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the final practice session at Istanbul Park. There were a few spots of rain on windscreens on the journey - after a very warm Friday, Saturday has dawned cooler in the Turkish city. Shortly before morning practice, light rain spots have also been falling in the paddock. The skies are mainly overcast, but as occasional rays of sunlight begin to warm the crisp air, the teams are expecting dry weather for the F1 action which starts in a little over an hour. Qualifying at 2.00pm (1100GMT) should also be dry, ahead of another mainly fine race day.

Yesterday Jenson Button was the class of the field but the Red Bulls weren't far behind and we suspect they were holding something in reserve.

Final practice will start in about 25 minutes, when the teams will get one last chance to tweak their set-up ahead of qualifying.

Johannes says: "Hi guys , this is the Massa's favourite track , do you see this race like a sort of last call for him ? I Think that if Alonso will be faster Massa will be definitely the "new Barrichello at Ferrari " ."

This is a massive race for Massa because if he can't beat Alonso in a straight fight at this track he probably won't be able to do it anywhere this season. As much as anything it is confidence thing for him. To get the right set-up and perform at his best he needs to have confidence in the team and his decisions. We know he is quick but he's just got to step up to the plate and start matching Alonso in qualifying.

As for becoming a "Barrichello", I'm not so sure. I don't think Alonso has the dominant position in the team that Schumacher did - it's a much fairer system their now. But it's true that if Alonso continues to do a better job then he will naturally get the backing of the team.

Force India: "Practice briefing is done, drivers are getting in the 'zone'."

Lucas di Grassi: "Overcast weather at Istanbul Park. Fat Veronica is ready for action!"

(For those wondering Fat Veronica is the name of his new car, complete with full-sized fuel tank.)

We've got a lot of photos on the site from yesterday (and they're not all pit babes), so I recommend flicking through those at your own leisure.

Last year Sebastian Vettel's best time in qualifying was a 1:27.016, it will be interesting to see if he can beat that today. Button managed a 1:28.280 yesterday but the track conditions are improving all the time.

Nigel says: "After all of these years of massive effort, it is wonderful that things are coming together so well for Mark Webber. Since the departure of Villeneuve, he is one of the few drivers who has opinions -already no small achievement- and what's more opinions, which he is willing to express. Webber now has the whole package -an unbreakable will to win, deep experience, a creative mind, a super car, a brilliant team, a sane and extremely competitive team mate, and a mischievous smile! Good luck for the sessions today, and the race tomorrow."

It's cloudy here and Force India has a weather update: "Small rain shower showing on the radar, we could be in for a semi-wet practice."

Track temperature is down by 25C today which will have a big effect on the tyres.

Lotus's plan: "5 mins to go to P3. Standard program for both cars. Installation laps and then 3 runs, first 2 runs on prime and last on option."

Steve (Melbourne): "Does the engine change for Webber have any penalties? 3 in a row for the 'Aussie Wonder'."

No penalties until he uses more than eight units over the course of the season. Apparently it was very high mileage so Red Bull isn't worried about it.

More Red Bull news is that it won't be running its F-duct after some minor problems yesterday. It'll be back in Canada.

So the session is under way and plenty of cars flood onto the track for an installation lap.

Kovalainen is going very slowly and reports a problem with his gearbox. That's been a common problem for Lotus this year.

James has a new idea to measure fastest laps: "Just kicking around the idea of having a new fastest lap system, 'Fastest lap based on fuel attrition'. Every lap in a race is potentially a fastest lap, due to the loss of fuel/weight from the previous lap. A constant that remains so until the end of the race. As it currently stands, fastest laps don't tell you much of, who the 'movers' are on the track. Removing the fuel element from times, could give a better indication of who is pushing."

Sutil already has a problem and is crawling back to the pits in his Force India. He just about makes it back. And the Force India mechanics run down to meet him to push him back to the garage. They've had to jack him up which suggests the car is stuck in gear. Maybe a hydraulics problem.

Hamilton is out on track, just checking his car over for the first time today. Nobody has set a time yet, Schumacher, Rosberg and Webber are yet to leave the pits.

Force India confirms "loss of hydraulic pressure" on Sutil's car.

Jim asks: "Do you really believe F1 will race in the US in 2012? Is Herman Tilke Bernie's brother-in-law or something that he gets all of the track designs?"

I really hope it is a success but there are a number of questions that have yet to be answered. Mainly, where the money is coming from. They need around $200 million to build a track and it's very easy to draw comparisons to Donington's bid to hold the British Grand Prix last year when the money never emerged.

On the plus side, Ecclestone is much more involved with this bid and he has nothing to gain by giving the contract to someone that can't see it through. The Donington scernario was him getting his own back on the BRDC and Silverstone for not cooperating. But with the US, why would he allow someone to come in who can't fo the job.

However, if it was up to me I would have gone back to Watkins Glen or used Laguna Seca. But I suppose you could argue modern F1 regulations may have ruined those tracks...

Back in Turkey, di Grassi is out on track in Fat Veronica and about to set a competitive time. He had to lift a lot through turn eight, it's almost like a completely different catergory compared to the Red Bulls.

Webber is crawling on track with an obvious problem. That is very bad news for Red Bull because he is doing about 40MPH aroun turn eight.

Team radio confirms there is no throttle response from the engine and he is going back to the garage on idle.

Jim says: "Watkins Glen would be nice, but what about Road America in Winsconsin? A nice 4 mile track through the woods. However, the stray deer being killed during practice or a race might be a little disgusting."

Yep, Road America is another great track. That was where Christiano da Matta came across a dear with very nasty results if I remember correctly?

So Webber is still crawling back to the pits and is coming up to the final complex of corners now.

Meanwhile, his team-mate Vettel is up and running with no problems.

Adam asks: "Just a quick question, what exactly is/occurs on the 'installation' lap?"

The answer is not a huge amount. The teams check the telemetry is still working and that the car is behaving as it was the previous day. They strip the cars right down overnight so they just want to make sure everything is working as they expect it will before they continue with set-up work.

Vettel has just set the best time of the weekend with a 1:28.011, Rosberg is 0.840 off in second and Kubica is 0.847 off in third.

Jim: "Yep, it was da Matta in August of 2006."

Steve: "I'm with Jim - Is Tilke the only track designer available? All his tracks end up the same boring with little overtaking."

Hamilton is locking his tyres into the final corner but still sets a 1:27.827. Vettel best is now 1:27.482. But these times are on hard tyres.

Schumacher takes turn eight nearly flat and goes fourth fastest with that lap. We are now seeing low-fuel laps.

Lewis Hamilton spins off at turn eight and gets stuck in the gravel. The car bottomed out mid-corner and then ran wide onto the astroturf as teh car snapped around on him.

Hamilton has been given a push and is going again with what looks like at least two punctures. The good news for him is that he will get back to the pits to continue the session. He'll have to be careful not to damage his car on the way back.

Hamilton is scraping his diffuser all the way back to the pits because he has two flat rear tyres. That will cost him, but it would have been worse if he hadn't made it back to the pits.

Jim: "I have always been a huge fan of Massa, but it seems like he lacks the pure intestinal fortitutude to get everything out of his car since last years incident. He was doing much better last year with that pathetic excuse for a Ferrari. I know Ferrari says they are keen to extend his contract, but with a driver like Kubica (also a big fan of his) available next year and with his results in a less than stellar car, how can Ferrari pass up on him?"

I think one of the bigger questions is whether Kubica wants to go to Ferrari to compete with Alonso when he is with Renault that is making big improvements and are willing to build a car around him. Remember, it was only four years ago that Renault won two world championships, I know there have been changes there but Kubica seems very happy right now. I think

Vettel's time of 1:27.482 still stands as the fastest but Webber is back out now. Webber goes 14th but his tyres will be just getting up to temperature now for a fast lap, let's see if he can beat Vettel...

Alonso's time is a 1:27.866, Schumacher 1:27.879.

Webber is gradually improving but is still 0.852 off Vettel's best on his second lap

For those asking, I suspect Hamilton will continue and there will be no penalty for changing the diffuser. He should get out for a soft-tyre lap in the next 20 mins and will definitely be back in time for qualifying.

Sutil's car is still up on jacks after his hydraulic problem so I'm not sure he will return in this session.

Webber is now second fastest, 0.325 off Vettel. We haven't seen a soft-tyre lap from any of the front runners yet.

Webber sets the fastest middle sector on his last lap but it hasn't improved his overall lap time.

Force India: "It is unlikely that Adrian will get out again before the end of the session."

Webber is now on a very fast lap ... but just made a mistake into the final few corners and is still 0.071 off Vettel.

Massa is still running a heavy fuel load as he clocks a time 3 seconds off the pace.

Mike Gascoyne is happy with his drivers: "Good second run from both drivers, Jarno a couple of tenths quicker than Heikki."

Action on the track has died down as the teams bolt on soft tyres for one last run before qualifying.

Alonso leaves the pits on softs as Alguersuari is about to post a time on brand new rubber. Alguersuari goes 11th but is still over a second off the pace.

Alonso starts his lap ... he had to make a big correctio turn four and has to back out in turn eight ... Very rough and ready on the exit of turn 10 ... and he's more or less aborted that lap.

Hamilton is back on track with soft tyres. No major damage to his car and he looks more comfortable in turn eight this time.

Hamilton goes quickest by 0.086 with a time of 1:27.396.

All the front runners are out on softs now.

Webber runs wide on his opening lap and decides to abort it.

Vettel is cruising too, so just trying to find a gap on the circuit for a quick lap.

Kubica fourth now. Rosberg beats him and is 0.35 off the fastest. Alonso is back in the pits so won't be setting a quick time in this session.

Both Red Bulls having problems on their hot laps. Vettel off at turn eight and Webber off at turn four. Both cars are ok but proof that the Red Bull is still not as nailed down as it appeared to be.

Webber spins off in a big way at turn eight after a quick first sector. He keeps the car out of the wall but that is the end of his session, his tyres are shot.

As the chequered flag falls Vettel is quickest and Rosberg goes second 0.273 off the Red Bull. Vettel's time a 1:27.086.

So Red Bull is still very quick but Webber's confidence will be very heavily knocked after those two mistakes on his hot laps.

Hamilton looks in contention but the surprise package is Rosberg, it was a brilliant lap and shows that the Mercedes has more potential than we have given it credit.

It should provide a thrilling qualifying session, make sure you join us to see if Red Bull can take its seventh consecutive pole of the season.
