Rumble Johnson gets Brenneman on October 1
As the UFC continued to fire out bout announcements on Saturday, a significant welterweight battle between Anthony Johnson and Charlie Brenneman almost got lost under the pile-up of big fights.
On October 1 a UFC Live card will take place in Washington, although the main event is yet to be confirmed. However, two fights have been announced, with Johnson taking on Brenneman and Mac Danzig meeting Matt Wiman.
Brenneman made a name for himself at the most recent UFC Live event, shocking the world by stepping in at the 11th hour for Nate Marquardt to beat the in-form Rick Story. The 30-year-old's record now reads nine wins from 10 fights, and another big-name scalp would confirm him as a genuine contender in the 170lb division.
Johnson is just about the biggest welterweight on the UFC roster, and he showed a different side to his game in his recent win over Dan Hardy. Usually a devastating striker, Johnson outwrestled Hardy for three rounds to end a long injury absence with a victory.
Both men have set themselves up for big 2011s, and the winner can undoubtedly expect a big fight as reward for victory on October 1.
Danzig, meanwhile, is coming off a Knockout of the Night win over Joe Stevenson. He was supposed to fight Donald Cerrone at UFC 131 but had to withdraw due to injury.
His opponent Wiman aims to bounce back from a razor-thin loss to Siver, but he does hold a controversial submission victory over Danzig already. Danzig was deemed to be out when Wiman locked on a guillotine, but he clearly wasn't as he got straight back to his feet, so there remains unfinished business between the two fighters.
Elsewhere, Evan Dunham v Shamar Bailey has been added to the UFC Fight Night 25: Shields v Ellenberger card on September 17.
