Initial contracts have been issued for a fight between Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis, according to the Brazilian's manager.

Machida has been awaiting an opponent since he knocked out Randy Couture at UFC 129, although he did turn down a fight with Rashad Evans at short notice.

Davis, meanwhile, was the man slated to fight Evans before he had to withdraw due to knee injury. The setback was never believed to be too bad, and it is expected both men could return before the end of the year.

"We had the first contacts and we may soon know more, Machida's manager told Yahoo Esportes. "[Davis] is the most concrete option in the division. He'd be a huge opponent for Lyoto, who's one of the biggest idols of the sport in Brazil and needs to fight again soon."

Commenting on the bout, which could see the winner heading towards a light-heavyweight title shot in 2012, Machida said: "It'd be a clash of styles.

"Davis is a wrestler, who keeps a strong rhythm on all the rounds until the end. I would need to adjust some aspects in my training to fight him, but this technical change always was one of my best characteristics. I won't have any problems."
