Gilbert Melendez has thrown his hat into the ring to take on UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

Edgar proved himself the best lightweight in the division when taking out Gray Maynard in a fight of the year contender at UFC 136.

Melendez is the current Strikeforce champion but he is prepared to head into the UFC mix if he can get a shot at Edgar.

"The UFC title is the best belt, I want that belt and I want it as soon as possible," Melendez told MMAFighting. "I honestly feel like I'm the No. 1 contender and I feel like I'm ready for the title shot now.

"The most frustrating thing is the recognition, a lot of people don't recognise me as a great fighter because I haven't beaten any UFC guys."
