Thiago Alves encountered yet more problems with weight cutting at the UFC 138 weigh-ins on Friday, eventually getting down to the legal 171lb limit after failing to hit his target at the first time of asking.

Alves takes on the undefeated Papy Abedi on Saturday, hoping to breathe new life into his welterweight career after a loss to Rick Story last time out.

On two previous occasions the Pitbull has failed to make the 171lb limit for a non-title fight, prompting president Dana White on the last occasion to tell Alves to move to middleweight. The Brazilian refused and is on his last chance, and he will not have impressed White by initially tipping the scales at 172lbs.

Alves later returned after an additional hour to cut the extra pound, which he did so successfully to ensure all 10 fights go ahead as planned on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Brad Pickett weighed in two pounds lighter than Renan Barao for the co-main event, while the two main event stars, Mark Munoz and Chris Leben both came in at 186lbs for their middleweight showdown.

Further down the card, it was worth noting the 15lb difference between Rob Broughton and Phil De Fries ahead of their heavyweight encounter.
