Damaged hand threatens six-month Velasquez absence

The expected heavyweight title fight between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez faces the prospect of being delayed by a damaged hand to the latter.

The UFC 146 medical suspensions revealed Velasquez had damaged his left hand in the act of stopping Antonio Silva via first round TKO. He will now face an X-ray, which could determine a six-month layoff.

In all likelihood, the X-ray will confirm no lasting damage, as is often the case with post-fight suspensions. However, worst-case scenario would prevent Velasquez returning to action until November 20.

England's Dan Hardy and Paul Sass were both medically cleared, such was the clinical nature of their victories.

UFC 146 medical suspensions:
Frank Mir: Suspended until July 23rd, no contact until July 11th.
Cain Velasquez: Suspended until November 20th pending X-ray of left hand but could be cleared early by physician; minimum suspension until June 26th with no contact until June 17th.
Antonio Silva: Suspended until November 20th pending nasal X-ray but could be cleared early by physician; minimum suspension until July 23rd with no contact until July 11th for lacerations.
Dave Herman: Suspended until July 23rd with no contact until July 11th.
Stipe Miocic: Suspended until June 26th with no contact until June 11th.
Shane del Rosario: Suspended until July 23rd with no contact until July 11th.
Lavar Johnson: Minimum suspension until July 11th with no contact until June 26th. Must see orthopedic surgeon within 30 days to have left elbow evaluated.
Diego Brandao: Suspended until June 26th with no contact until June 17th for tough fight.
Darren Elkins: Suspended until June 26th with no contact until June 17th for left ear hematoma and tough fight.
Edson Barboza: Suspended until July 11th with no contact until June 26th.
Jamie Varner: Minimum suspension until June 26th with no contact until June 17th; must have right hand X-rayed and cleared or suspended until November 20th.
Jason Miller: Minimum suspension or no contest until July 11th and no contact until June 26th; must have right thumb and left knee cleared by Ortho or Sports doctor or suspended until November 20th.
CB Dollaway: Minimum suspension until July 11th or no contact until June 26th; must have X-rayed and cleared by doctor or suspended until November 20th.
Duane Ludwig: Suspended until July 23rd with no contact until July 11th.
Jake Volkmann: Volkmann must have left elbow cleared by Orthopedic or Sports doctor or no contest until November 20th.
Mike Brown: Suspended until June 26th with no contact until June 17th for left forehead laceration.
Daniel Pineda: Suspended until June 26th with no contact until June 17th for tough fight.
