UFC president Dana White has ruled out the prospect of Frankie Edgar landing an immediate title shot if he drops into the featherweight division.

Edgar was unsuccessful in a lightweight title tilt against Ben Henderson at the weekend, losing a controversial split decision.

Following that defeat, there has been speculation Edgar may slim down to 145lbs for his next contest. However, he would have to work for a chance to earn a chance to win the division's crown.

"No, I think Frankie would have to fight somebody at 145 [before landing a title shot]," White said. "We've got that thing backed up. We've got all these backed up titles right now. That one's backed up. And if I know Frankie like I do, I'm sure he's gonna want to go down there and fight the right way.

"Again, I'm not telling Frankie to go to 145 or anything like that. I'll talk to him later and see what he wants to do."
