Injured Browne finished by Bigfoot; Ellenberger wins

Travis Browne was left to fight off one leg in Friday's UFC on FX 5 main event, and Antonio Bigfoot Silva took full advantage to record a first-round victory in Minnesota.

Browne entered the heavyweight contest as favourite, and he certainly looked confident as he came out throwing spinning heel kicks and switch kicks at the more stationary Silva. However, one mistimed punch led to the injury that changed the fight, and Silva landed a big right hand to spark the end at 3.27 of round one.

Browne was in trouble as soon as he threw a straight right, which led to him over-stepping and damaging his knee. The troubled area instantly became inflamed and Browne struggled to stay upright as he continued to fight off one leg.

Silva sensed his opportunity to end the fight, backing Browne towards the cage before rattling the chin with big right. His follow-up hammer fists prompted the ref to step in, marking a disappointing night for heavyweight contender Browne.

In the co-main event, a patient - somewhat boring - version of Jake Ellenberger showed up against Jay Hieron in what was a rematch after Hieron had won their first battle back in 2006. On this occasion the decision went the way of Ellenberger, who took an extremely cautious contest 29-28 29-28 29-28.

Ellenberger had reason to start slowly, having gassed badly in his last outing against Martin Kampmann. This time he tried to pace himself, but that only served to rob him of all attacking instincts.

The first stanza belonged to Hieron as Ellenberger failed to find his target, but the Juggernaut answered in the second with a beautifully timed double-leg backed up by some scything elbows. The last round was cagey, edged by another Ellenberger takedown followed by a punch right on the final klaxon, but it is a win that will have done little to impress UFC officials.

The No. 1 contender to Demetrious Johnson's flyweight crown is John Dodson after he made easy work of stopping Jussier Formiga in the second round. Dodson, so imaginative and so fast inside the Octagon, landed a hook to the body followed by a left hand to the head as he dropped Formiga en route to victory.

"This will be the fastest fight you've ever seen," Dodson said of his title fight with Johnson. "Make sure you rewind and watch it in slow motion."
