Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone are heading for a much-anticipated lightweight bout on January 26, according to reports emerging from the United States.

Pettis and Cerrone have long been linked to a 155lb battle, after their initially arranged battle was cancelled at UFC 150. Injury and a staph infection has since kept Pettis sidelined from a potential rematch.

As two of the top contenders in the lightweight division the pair bring top class kickboxing skills to the Octagon, with Pettis a previous conqueror of reigning champion Ben Henderson, and Cerrone coming off a knockout win over Melvin Guillard.

MMA Junkie reports that the UFC plans to pair Pettis and Cerrone on January 26, although the venue is not yet known for that potential card.

The winner of the bout would propel themselves towards a UFC title shot, with Henderson and Nate Diaz set to square off in December.
