Thiago Alves has ruled himself out of action until June 2013 in order to fully heal from a catalogue of fitness issues.

Alves last fought in March, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against Martin Kampmann. He was then supposed to meet Siyar Bahadurzada but withdrew due to injury.

As a former No. 1 contender of the 170lb division, Alves maintains a large fanbase due to his explosive Muay Thai style. The Brazilian holds wins over the likes of Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck, but has been struggling to hit top form.

As a result, he will use an extended layoff period to recover from chest and knee problems, so that he can re-launch his career in mid-2013.

"Following my chest surgery, my management and myself have decided to take this year off to fix my left knee as well as all my other little injuries to come back stronger than ever in 2013 to make another run for the title and get it this time," Alves told Buddha Sport.

"I should be back by June 2013."
