The UFC took a giant step towards a new age on Thursday by signing female fighters Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate, according to reports.

Rousey is viewed as a star of the future by UFC president Dana White, who has never previously put on a female fight. That looks set to change after TMZ reported Rousey had officially signed with the promotion.

Tate then tweeted: "So stoked to be fighting for the UFC, it's been a dream of mine for a long time! So happy it's finally come true."

It is expected that the UFC will stage a bout involving Rousey in 2013, with White clearly recognising her talent and commercial power.

The news broke on a significant night for MMA, with reports suggesting Strikeforce will stage its last event on January 12. The promotion has been treading water for a while but will look to go out on a high.

Daniel Cormier will meet Dion Staring before making his switch to the UFC, while Luke Rockhold will face Lorenz Larkin for the middleweight title.

Nate Marquardt and Tarec Saffiedine contest the welterweight belt, while Gilbert Melendez will square off with Pat Healy at 155lbs.
