Antonio Silva has thrown down the gauntlet to Cain Velasquez, insisting he wants a second crack at the UFC heavyweight champion.

Silva put himself firmly in the mix for a title shot with a dominant win over Alistair Overeem at UFC 156 last weekend, but the memories of his crushing loss to Velasquez last year sit prominent in the memory bank.

The UFC will have the final say on who Velasquez will face, but Silva does not believe he did justice to himself in their previous meeting on account of a nasty cut he picked up early in the fight.

"I am highly interested in facing Cain Velasquez again," Silva told MMA Junkie. "He's a great champion. He's a great person - very humble.

"When we first faced off, I didn't get much of a chance to fight. He had the right strategy. He has a great team guiding him. His strategy worked.

"My forehead was cut open a few seconds into the fight. I was struggling to try to see. I wasn't having any success. So I was left knowing I could have done better."
