Jon Jones apologises for Sonnen steroid slur

Jon Jones has apologised for making the suggestion that Chael Sonnen has spent a large part of his career on steroids.

Jones crossed a line when entering into trash talk with his UFC light-heavyweight title rival earlier in the week, claiming Sonnen uses Testosterone Replacement Therapy because of previous steroid usage.

"Take steroids in your prime testosterone levels drop then you take TRT to get in your prime again," Jones said on his Twitter account. "Maybe I should just join the team $$$."

The 205lb champ, who fights Sonnen on April 27, later spoke of the subject again on UFC Tonight, saying: "People know that Chael Sonnen has done steroids throughout his whole career and that's probably why his testosterone is low now."

However, it appears Jones now regrets making the remark. In all likelihood he was merely trying to hype the fight against a man for whom he clearly developed respect during their stint as TUF 17 coaches.

"I had no right to accuse Chael of being a career long steroid user I apologise," Jones tweeted.
