Former light-heavyweight and middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen will face Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua on August 17 at TD Garden in Boston. Sonnen announced the bout on Tuesday night on Fuel TV.

"I will be taking on Shogun," Sonnen said. "I will be fighting him on Fox Sports 1 on August 17 in Boston. We were going to fight [at UFC 161] in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but they pulled Shogun off the card."

Rua originally was scheduled to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on June 15 in Winnipeg. A back injury, however, forced Nogueira to pull out of the fight.

Sonnen, on Sunday, offered to step in for Nogueira. But UFC officials opted instead to remove Rua from UFC 161.

Sonnen (27-13-1) has dropped three of his five most recent fights. The three losses, however, occurred during title bouts - two against middleweight champion Anderson Silva and the most recent, in April, against light-heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones.

Rua will seek to rebound from a unanimous-decision loss to Alexander Gustafsson on December 8. A former UFC light-heavyweight champion, Rua has a professional record of 21-7.
