Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk announced his retirement on Monday although he had not fought for almost three years.

The 40-year-old Sherk's last outing came in September 2010 when he defeated Evan Dunham at UFC 119 but he was unable to overcome a series of injuries.

He defeated Kenny Florian at UFC 64 in 2006 to win the vacant lightweight title and successfully defended his crown against Hermes Franca at UFC 73 the following summer.

He tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone following the bout and was suspended, initially for a year but this was subsequently reduced to six months.
