Newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will undergo surgery to repair a torn right bicep he suffered two weeks prior to UFC 171.
Hendricks (16-2) claimed the vacant UFC welterweight title last weekend, defeating Robbie Lawler via unanimous decision at UFC 171 in Dallas.
On Wednesday, Hendricks confirmed to ESPN he went into the fight with a pre-existing injury. He expects to sit out four to six weeks, before starting a rehab programme.
"My last day of sparring, I threw a hook and felt it pop," Hendricks told ESPN. "At that point, I told myself, 'I'm done [sparring]'.
"I had people working on my arm, doing active recovery on it, but it was already done. They were trying to help me prolong it and reassess after the fight. I didn't think it was that bad. I had to fight. I knew I wasn't going to let the UFC down like that. I was the main event. I said, 'Yeah, this sucks, but do I think I can win doing this, this and this?' I thought I could."
Hendricks is aiming for an autumn return to the Octagon, possibly as late as November.
"They said six weeks [inactivity], but I'm the type of guy who is going to [work] every day, twice a day if they allow me," Hendricks said. "They told me four weeks when I had knee surgery and I was back in two, wrestling. I'm going to do what it is to keep me healthy, but also what it takes to get me back in the Octagon better and faster."
Meanwhile, Carlos Condit has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and partially torn meniscus in his right knee following an MRI on Wednesday. The 30-year-old will also require surgery.
Condit (29-8) suffered the injuries in a second-round TKO loss to Tyron Woodley at UFC 171 last weekend in Dallas.
It appeared he initially suffered an injury while trying to defend a takedown. He was later unable to continue, after a leg kick by Woodley spun him around awkwardly on the right leg.
Condit's manager, Malki Kawa, confirmed the injuries to ESPN. An official date for the operation has not been scheduled.
A former No.1 welterweight contender, Condit is 1-3 in his past four fights. He came up short in a title bid against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November 2012.
