Chael Sonnen has reportedly been notified that he failed a post-fight drug screening following his outstanding performance against Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

California State Athletic Commission executive officer, George Dodd, confirmed to Sherdog.com that the middleweight had been notified on Saturday.

Sonnen produced a sensational display in the August 7 main event at UFC 117, coming within a couple of minutes of inflicting a first UFC defeat on the previously untouchable Silva. Using his Greco-Roman wrestling, Sonnen was relentless in his assault before victory was snatched away at the death by a late triangle choke by the Brazilian.

Dodd revealed all fighters had passed the drugs-of-abuse scans, but Sonnen had a case to answer regarding a failed performance-enhancing drug screen.

"[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday," Dodd told Sherdog.com in Los Angeles.

Sonnen is scheduled to rematch Silva for the middleweight title when Silva returns to full fitness, but he would face a lengthy spell out of the sport if the failed test cannot be cleared up. The fighter's manager, Matt Lindland, currently knows nothing of the failed test.
