Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort appear set to go head-to-head on SuperBowl weekend after strong reports that Frankie Edgar's lightweight title defence with Gray Maynard will headline UFC 125.

Silva v Belfort had originally been planned for UFC 125 on New Year's Day, with Belfort commenting on Esportes.r7.com: "It's all set. The fight was scheduled for January 1st here in Las Vegas, the UFC's New Year's event. For sure it will be the New Year's with the most Brazilians in Las Vegas. Everyone's invited."

However, doubts instantly emerged over the availability of middleweight champion Silva, who is still recovering from a rib problem picked up ahead of his victory over Chael Sonnen. The Brazilian's manager, Ed Soares, told MMA Weekly seven days ago: "I think at this point, we don't know what date it's going to be. It's definitely going to be some time next year. We just don't know if it's going to be January 1st or SuperBowl weekend."

Now MMAFighting and MMAjunkie are both reporting that verbal agreements have taken place for Edgar and Maynard to headline UFC 125, allowing Silva and Belfort to switch to the SuperBowl weekend on February 6.

The UFC is yet to confirm either event, but it is expected that Edgar will be asked to defend his 155lb title against the only man who has ever beaten him. Maynard is undefeated in his MMA career and is coming off a victory over Kenny Florian.
