Jon Fitch called for a fight with Jake Shields

Jon Fitch has not been granted his wish by the UFC, who have pencilled the welterweight in for a battle of attrition with Jake Ellenberger at UFC 126.

Fitch recently told ESPN that he wanted to fight Jake Shields, who is widely expected to provide the next challenger to Georges St-Pierre's 170lb title if the Canadian beats Josh Koscheck. Shields defeated Martin Kampmann at UFC 121, but Fitch is frustrated that the former Strikeforce man is set to land a title shot after one UFC appearance.

UFC president Dana White has been angered by Fitch in recent times though, after Fitch told ESPN he would never fight AKA team-mate Koscheck - not even for the title. White responded by claiming it was 'f****** ridiculous' for team-mates not to collide, and now Fitch appears to have paid the price.

Having lost only one of his 14 UFC fights, Fitch has been denied a high-profile showdown against a top-five welterweight, with Ellenberger, currently riding a two-fight win streak, the man thrust forward as the next obstacle.

MMA Weekly reports verbal agreements have taken place between the fighters, although the UFC is yet to confirm the bout for a card headlined by Anderson Silva's middleweight title showdown with Vitor Belfort.
