UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will go under the knife within the next two weeks to correct a shoulder problem.

Velasquez recently confirmed the news that he will require surgery on a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The Mexican-American had originally hoped the problem would heal without the need for an operation.

ESPN understands Velasquez's surgery is set for two weeks' time, after which he will enter a lengthy period of rehabilitation that is expected to keep him sidelined for up to eight months. However, the fighter's AKA camp are targeting a six-month schedule for his return.

Velasquez recently confessed he would understand if the UFC created an interim title in his absence, with No. 1 contender Junior Dos Santos left without an opponent.

Dos Santos could potentially square off against former champion Brock Lesnar or Frank Mir, who beat Mirko Cro-Cop in his last outing.
