Young considers bringing shotgun for UFC debut
The UFC's latest British import will make his debut at UFC 131 this weekend, and Jason Young is considering bringing a gun to the cage for his fight with Dustin Poirier.
Young is a talented featherweight who has won four of his last five fights, only losing to submission specialist Paul Sass. He has been given a five-fight contract by the UFC, and such is their confidence in him that his debut will be made against the world's No. 6 featherweight, Dustin Poirier.
"Shotgun" Young is not naive enough to believe the UFC will uphold the five-fight contract if he loses two or three on the bounce, so he knows he needs to make an instant impact at UFC 131. Poirier had been set for a fight with Rani Yahya before injury forced Yahya out of the bout, and they have since slated the Brazilian to fight Chad Mendes.
That shows the faith the UFC has in Young, who insists he will not be fazed by the situation.
"Obviously if I have a bad start and lose my first two, the chances are I won't see the third one," Young told ESPN. "My first fight is a really hard fight, Dustin Poirier, he's No. 6 in the world so they've put me in the deep end. But I'm no small fish."
Young has plenty to look forward to over the coming months, but foremost in his mind is the moment Bruce Buffer spins in his direction for the introduction. Dan Hardy has made it his trademark to roar back at the ring announcer, while Paley Daley makes his own signature gesture, so Young has been considering his own.
"I never thought my next fight would be Bruce Buffer announcing me. Now I've got to make up my own calling card," he said. "Dan Hardy's got his, Paul Daley... My nickname's Shotgun - I can't really bring a gun to the cage!"
Jason Young was promoting The UFC Personal Trainer, a new fitness game being launched on Wii, Xbox and PS3
