Jon Fitch is targeting the co-main event slot at UFC 138 after he was given the all-clear to start a training camp in September.

Fitch is recovering from shoulder surgery, which prevented him fighting BJ Penn at UFC 132. The Prodigy is still the man Fitch wants to fight, and it seems the path is clear for the welterweights to settle their differences in November.

UFC 138 is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title showdown between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos. Fitch is eyeing the co-main event vacancy for his return.

The AKA man tweeted: "Great news. I will be cleared to start training camp September 1st. I'll be more than ready for UFC in San Jose."

Fitch and Penn fought to a draw in their first bout, and it seems the UFC are more than prepared to hold both men back in order to get a definitive result.

Jake Shields has been mentioned as an alternative opponent, but Fitch v Penn is building momentum for the end of this year.
