Wickens confirmed as Virgin reserve
Virgin has confirmed Robert Wickens as one of its reserve drivers alongside Sakon Yamamoto.
Wickens has been driving for Carlin in Formula Renault 3.5 this season, with the team backed by Virgin title sponsors Marussia. After rumours that Wickens was poised to replace Jerome d'Ambrosio, team principal John Booth said "He (Wickens) is in our young driver stable but we certainly don't plan on putting him in a F1 car yet. Robert is concentrating on his Renault series. He is doing a good job in that. We will then take it from there."
Virgin has now officially confirmed him as one of its reserve drivers, however, opening the door to possible time in the car during Friday practice.
"Toronto-born Robert will attend each of the remaining grands prix where there is no clash with the Formula Renault 3.5 series, with effect from next weekend's Canadian grand prix", Virgin announced.
"We are delighted to welcome him to Virgin Racing's roster of reserve drivers," Booth said.
