Profile

If it were not for the well-established centre pairing of Will Carling and Jeremy Guscott, Phil de Glanville may have enjoyed a more prolific England career.

After joining Bath in 1989, he made his England debut against South Africa in 1992, coming on as a replacement winger at Twickenham. In a career spanning seven years, de Glanville earned 38 England caps and scored eight tries.

In 1996 he replaced Will Carling as captain, but when Clive Woodward took over the reins the following year, he fell out of favour and lost his place in the starting line-up to Will Greenwood and the captaincy to Lawrence Dallaglio, but remained a squad player for the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
