David Pickering currently serves as chief executive of both the Welsh Rugby Union and also as the elected chairman of the Six Nations committee.
Pickering's ascent to the top of the WRU and beyond came following a distinguished playing career in which he won 27 caps for Wales between 1983 and 1987, with eight as captain. He played his club rugby for both Llanelli and Neath.
He took his first step towards the boardroom when he took over as Welsh team manager during the Graham Henry era of the late 1990s. His appointment in 1998 saw him in place as Wales went on an 11-match unbeaten run, including their first win over South Africa. He managed the team through the 1999 World Cup, which was also hosted by Wales, before stepping down to be replaced by Alan Phillips in 2002.
Pickering succeeded Glanmor Griffiths as chairman of the WRU in 2003, and since has overseen two Grand Slam campaigns and a turnaround in financial terms from the troubles that saw the Celtic Warriors disbanded in 2004.
Pickering's tenure with the WRU has seen the union reduce debts by up to £30 million. He was elected to replace Frenchman Jacques Laurans as head of the Six Nations committee in May 2008. Pickering's election is for a three year term, making him one of the most senior administrators in world rugby. In 2012, he was appointed to the board of Rugby World Cup Ltd, the body charged with delivering the game's showpiece event.
