1958
With Eden Park closed, New Zealand take on Australia on the Epsom Showgrounds in Auckland. The All Blacks ran out 17-8 winners to take the series.

2012
Twenty-two year old Neil Spence, who played for Ireland Under-20s and also for the full Irish side in a non-capped game against the Barbarians four months earlier, died in a tragic accident on his family farm in Ulster along with his brother Graham and father Noel. It was reported that his father, brother, Nevin and his sister were overcome by fumes in a slurry tank at the family farm, possibly while trying to save a dog

Legendary flanker Colin Meads scored the hosts only try as Don Clarke kicked four penalties and a conversion as they bounced back from a 6-3 defeat at Christchurch two weeks previously.

1893
A motion to legalise professionalism was defeated at the AGM of the RFU. A majority of 146 voted against the proposal to reward players with "broken time" payments by 282 to 136 at the Westminister Palace Hotel in Victoria, London.

1900
The Bristol club's request for permission to establish a League to promote competition among junior clubs was rejected at the RFU's AGM.

1969
Popular Cardiff prop John O'Shea was sent off for punching Coventry's Bill Gittings in an ill-tempered second-half at Coundon Road. O'Shea became the first Cardiff player sent-off while captaining the club.

1980
Wales opened their Centenary season celebrations with a 32-25 win against a strong Overseas XV. Fullback Roger Blyth scores 24 points, including three tries, for the hosts.
