Scarlets coach Nigel Davies is set to offer Gavin Quinnell a coaching role with the region after his playing career was ended by a horrific eye injury.

The former Worcester forward, son of Wales legend Derek and brother to internationals Scott and Craig, permanently lost the sight in his left eye following an incident in Llanelli's Principality Premiership game against Cross Keys on October 2.

The Scarlets have made a formal complaint to the Welsh Rugby Union and the matter is under investigation by Gwent Police.

"We were devastated for Gav," Davies told The Daily Telegraph. "He had really come on since returning from Italy and was about to make the step across to regional rugby. He has been so brave and dealt with the incident magnificently.

"I have spoken to him and told him there would be a number of opportunities for someone like him with the club in our coaching team. Gav is very important to us."

Quinnell himself wrote on his Facebook page yesterday: "I am really overwhelmed by all the people that are saying so many kind words to me at this time and am thanking all of you. I really wish I could say thank you to you all in person but sorry, I can't."
