Liam Williams can be new JPR - Davies

Wales newcomer Liam Williams has been likened to Welsh legend JPR Williams by Scarlets coach Nigel Davies.

The 20-year-old was called up to the Wales squad for their clash with Australia at the Millennium stadium on Saturday after impressing for the Scarlets this season since making his regional debut in September.

Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny is a doubt for the match making a call up for Liam Williams a real possibility, and Davies believes the young back has the ability to make a lasting impact.

"It's been very quick for Liam," he told Walesonline. "But like I tell all the players in my squad , if you start to get regular rugby within the region, then you are never far away from international honours.

"Liam has done very well for us. It was a huge game for him to play in against Northampton last week and he did extremely well.

"We all see glimpses of JPR (below) in him in terms of his bravery and his ability. It's just what he reminds me of. It's a different era, it's a different time. But the guy is fearless and his aerial skills are very good and he's got great energy. He's still got a lot to learn, but he's very down to earth."

While Williams is just about to start his international career, Stephen Jones' appears to be drawing to an end after his omission from the squad to face the Wallabies.

Asked whether he felt Jones still has an international career ahead of him, Davies replied: "Who knows? If he plays well, then why not? That's the key to it. It's all very well building for the next World Cup, but in-between you've got to gain momentum and win rugby matches.

"If Steve is playing better than any other 10, then he should play. It will depend on his form and other people's form, as it always does. But we know he's a quality player who can play at that level of rugby."
