The Newport Gwent Dragons have released fly-half Matthew Jones from his contract to enable him to join Championship side Bristol.

The 27-year-old has found his first-team opportunities limited at Rodney Parade this season with Jason Tovey preferred at half-back. Jones has made just seven appearances this term and will journey to the Memorial Stadium hoping to help the West Country side achieve promotion back to the Aviva Premiership.

"I'm pleased to be joining Bristol Rugby," said Jones. "The Club are enjoying a strong season and there seems to be a fantastic team spirit.

"I'm looking forward to competing in the RFU Championship and challenging for a spot in the first-team."

Dragons rugby director Robert Beale said: "We would like to thank Matthew for his contribution at the Dragons and wish him luck for the rest of the season and the future."
