Northampton Saints are in discussions to sign Scarlets centre Jonathan Davies, according to reports.

With Roger Wilson, Chris Ashton and James Downey all departing from Franklin's Gardens, Jim Mallinder will have the luxury of room for manoeuvre within the newly expanded salary cap ahead of next season.

And with question marks surrounding the future of Jon Clarke as well, Mallinder will be looking to bolster his centre options. He has earmarked Davies as a potential addition, according to the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, with the Scarlets centre's contract up at the end of the current campaign.

And Mallinder has confirmed that Tom Wood is unlikely to feature in the rest of the Six Nations due to his toe injury. Mallinder said: "It is unlikely (he will play in the Six Nations). If he does get back it will be at the real latter stages. Tom has had his boot off now and started training, so it could be another two or three weeks at least to be honest.

"If he comes back too soon there is a danger that the foot will go again and they will be back to square one and it may need surgery. The physios are being cautious, at the very best it is two to three weeks."
