Scarlets boss Nigel Davies has revealed that fly-half Stephen Jones turned down the opportunity to move into a coaching role with the region.

The veteran fly-half was recently announced as one of four new signings by beleaguered Aviva Premiership side London Wasps and he will link up with the Adams Park side at the end of the current season.

And Davies has claimed that Jones - who was rumoured to be considering retiring from the game - was offered a non-playing role with the Scarlets, but the 104-cap half-back was adamant he wanted to continue on the field.

"I said that we could look to find an opportunity for him in the coaching set-up here," Davies told the BBC. "But Steve was adamant that he wanted to play."

"He has never shied away from a challenge and at his age, I think a new challenge is exactly what he would need if he's going to continue playing.

"Se he'll see it as a big challenge and want to prove himself in that league and I'm sure that's what he'll do."
