Dan Lydiate is set to miss Wales' end of year internationals and may also be sidelined for next year's Six Nations after breaking his ankle in the Dragons' RaboDirect PRO12 victory over Edinburgh on Friday night.

The 24-year-old flanker had to be helped from the field in the opening moments of the game at Rodney Parade and it was later confirmed that he had broken and dislocated his ankle. The news will be a significant blow for Wales and leaves the player's hopes of touring with the British & Irish Lions next summer hanging by a thread.

The Player of the Championship in this year's Six Nations that saw Wales power to Grand Slam glory, Lydiate is set to undergo surgery on the injury tomorrow with the Dragons reluctant to speculate on the length of time he will be sidelined.

Dragons team manager Rob Beale told the Western Mail: "Sadly Dan has been taken to hospital after breaking and dislocating his ankle and will undergo surgery on Sunday morning.

"It's a serious injury that requires surgery and will be out for some time. It has really put a dampener on what was a good evening."

Head coach Darren Edwards said: "It's a huge blow for him and for us. I don't know the time scale yet or how long he will be out. Let's just hope he still has a chance to achieve his goals.

"Dan is a world-class player whose tackling is known all over the world. He's also a great guy to have around the environment and is a good influence on everyone around him. It will be very sad not to have that presence."
