Wales fly-half Rhys Priestland could make his comeback from an Achilles injury for the Scarlets against Cardiff Blues next Saturday.

Priestland had originally feared he would miss the entire season after suffering the injury against Exeter in December. He subsequently missed Wales' successful Six Nations campaign and had to watch on as others pushed their claims for a place on the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.

But he is now back in training and could return against the Blues next weekend. Scarlets coach Simon Easterby said: "He'll definitely be in contention [to face the Blues] if he can come through the week."

"He's trying to build up strength in his calves and he hasn't got the biggest calves anyway so hopefully he'll get a good week's training."

Priestland's return may have come too late to press his claims to tour with the Lions with head coach Warren Gatland to name his squad for the three-Test tour later this month.

But a strong end to the season would probably see him selected for Wales' summer tour to Japan, where he would challenge to regain the fly-half shirt that has since gone to the Ospreys' Dan Biggar.
