British & Irish Lions hooker Richard Hibbard has undergone shoulder surgery and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Hibbard is moving to Gloucester at the end of the campaign and the news means he has probably played his last match for the Ospreys. Hibbard is now the third Welsh international in recent times to require shoulder surgery after Leigh Halfpenny and Sam Warburton were both sidelined after dislocating their shoulders while on Six Nations duty.

"Richard has an ongoing shoulder problem that has been troubling him, and after returning to the region this week he feels unable to continue playing," Ospreys medical performance manager Chris Towers said. "It is in his best interests to get this issue resolved and he will undergo surgery today.

"The expected minimum recovery time for such a procedure means it is unlikely he will play again between now and the end of the season."

The surgery could rule Hibbard out of Wales' summer tour to South Africa for their two Test series against the Springboks.
