Wales boss Warren Gatland and the Cardiff Blues are reportedly keeping an eye on Chiefs' fly-half Gareth Anscombe.

Anscombe's mother Tracey was born in Cardiff so there would be no issues over his residency and reports on Wales Online say Anscombe could be fast-tracked to the extent Wales are looking at him as an option for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Anscombe, whose father coaches Ulster, has been playing for the Chiefs in New Zealand but has found his Test prospects difficult due to the likes of Dan Carter, Aaron Cruden, Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade all plying their trade at fly-half. With his contract up at the end of the season, it seems the Blues are putting together a package with the view of tempting him over to the RaboDirect PRO12 where Wales would keep a close eye on him.

He has played for the New Zealand Under-20 side but as they are not the designated second team behind the All Blacks, that does not tie him to New Zealand on eligibility grounds.

Former Hurricanes boss Mark Hammett is the hot favourite to take over the Blues' coaching post following Phil Davies' departure earlier this year and the same reports say he has already contacted Anscombe about a potential move.
